As I sat down to share our mutually-felt outrage for the tragedies experienced by African Americans in our country, it felt important, but it also felt too easy. To decry the injustice of the needless deaths of so many black Americans at the hands of racist policies and practices, to wag our finger at overt and obvious abusive uses of power- these are merely restating the obvious. The response too easily crafted; the strokes too broad; the blame too wide and too narrow. Instead, I was convicted by the reminder that change starts with us.
In recent days, a multitude of organizations have joined the Black Lives Matter movement in a call for change. A righteous and just demand. And while it would be easy for us to point the finger of blame at someone else, we became painfully aware that too few organizations are looking at their own industries, their own history.
At Tucoemas, we are reminded that one of our core values is, “If each of us would only sweep our own doorstep, the whole world would be clean.”
It’s time we looked to our own doorstep.
Historically, financial institutions have been among the most egregious perpetrators of inequality and racial injustice. Not only have industry practices been part and parcel of the begrudgingly slow implementation of cultural progress and social justice, but the policies have lagged even further behind in the shadowy realms of covert racial inequity. Housing, lending, banking- all these tools of financial empowerment and wellbeing, while appearing racially agnostic on their face, have been historically implemented by policies that were anything but fair and equitable.
Credit Unions were birthed of the notion that too few on the margins were able to access the same tools of transformation as those who already were among the “haves.” Our movement has always sought to help and support people of “modest means” in an effort to ensure financial freedom for all people. We have done much, but there’s more to do.
Tucoemas is a wonderfully diverse place. We have been nationally recognized for our service to the Hispanic community. As a certified Community Develop Financial Institution (CDFI), we have demonstrated our efforts to reach financially fragile households in Tulare County. Our Pathways program targets the marginalized, providing financial resources and education to battle the systemic and predatory challenges faced by communities of color.
But we must do more. As the leadership of Tucoemas, we pledge to keep working on our own doorstep. While we encourage and support the transformation of the world around us, we must continue our own journey of investigating, listening and learning. We will shine a light on our own policies and procedures. We will commit to spend time and resources to learn more about the historic inequities fostered by financial institutions and develop a plan to do better. We will make every effort to sweep our own doorstep so we might be a more welcoming, more inclusive, more empowering partner for all people, especially our friends of color.
We recognize we are just one small team in a big, bright world. But if we might encourage our colleagues in the credit union movement, our friends and neighbors in the organizations we work with, our leaders and teachers in the churches and schools we attend… if everyone committed to sweeping their own doorstep- imagine what our world would be.

Mientras me siento a compartir el sentimiento mutuo sobre las tragedias ocurridas a Africanos Americanos en nuestro país, sentí que era importante, pero también muy fácil; apuntar las injusticias de las muertes innecesarias de tantos Africanos Americanos en manos de prácticas racistas, apuntar nuestros dedos al más obvio abuso de poder. Esto es solo reafirmar lo obvio. Una respuesta muy fácil de escribir, con puntos muy ambiguos; la culpa muy amplia y muy precisa. En cambio, tenía la convicción y el recordatorio de que el cambio empieza por nosotros.
Recientemente, múltiples organizaciones se han unido al movimiento Black Lives Matter en una llamada por un cambio. Mientras sería fácil para nosotros apuntar con el dedo y culpar a alguien más, tristemente nos dimos cuenta que muy pocas organizaciones están mirando hacia sus propias industrias y su propia historia.
En Tucoemas nos recordamos que uno de nuestro propios valores es “si cada uno de nosotros pudiera limpiar el frente de su puerta, el mundo entero estaría limpio”
Es hora que miremos el frente de nuestra puerta.
Históricamente, instituciones financieras han sido parte de los más horribles predadores de desigualdad e injusticias raciales. Las políticas de la industria no solo han sido parte de la lenta implementación de progreso cultural y justicia social, pero las políticas se han quedado mucho más atrás en el área de las sombras en cubrir inequidad racial. Viviendas, préstamos, banco; todas estas herramientas de empoderamiento financiero y bienestar, mientras parecen de cara racialmente imparciales, han sido históricamente implementadas por políticas que son todo menos justas y equitativas.
Las Cooperativas de Crédito nacieron por la noción de que muy pocos tenían acceso a las mismas herramientas de cambio que los que pertenecían a esa “mitad”. Nuestro movimiento siempre ha sido ayudar y apoyar a las personas de “medios modestos” en un esfuerzo de asegurar la libertad financiera para todos. Hemos hecho mucho, pero hay más por hacer.
Tucoemas es un sitio de diversidad fantástico. Nos han reconocido a nivel nacional por nuestro servicio a la comunidad hispana. Como Institución Financiera Certificada en el Desarrollo de la Comunidad (CDFI), hemos demostrado nuestros esfuerzos de alcanzar a los hogares financieramente frágiles en el condado de Tulare. Nuestro programa “Pathways” se dirige a aquellos marginalizados, proporcionando recursos financieros y educación para batallar los desafíos sistemáticos y predadores a los que se enfrentan las comunidades de color.
Pero tenemos que hacer más. Como equipo líder de Tucoemas, prometemos seguir trabajando en el frente de nuestra puerta. Mientras alentamos y apoyamos la transformación en el mundo a nuestro alrededor, debemos continuar nuestro propio camino de investigar, escuchar y aprender. Encenderemos una luz a nuestras propias políticas y procesos. Nos comprometemos a invertir tiempo y recursos para aprender más sobre la historia de inequidad fomentada por instituciones financieras y desarrollar un plan para hacerlo mejor. Vamos a hacer todo el esfuerzo para limpiar el frente de nuestra puerta para que podamos ser más acogedores, más inclusivos, más compañeros de empoderamiento para todos, especialmente para nuestros amigos de color.
Reconocemos que somos solo un pequeño equipo es este gran mundo. Pero puede que animemos a nuestros colegas en el movimiento de las Cooperativas de Crédito, a nuestros amigos en las organizaciones que nos acompañan, nuestros líderes y profesores en las iglesias y escuelas que atendemos… Si cada uno se compromete a limpiar el frente de su puerta, imagina lo que podría ser nuestro mundo.
